Just by hearing the word OFW, one would think that the person is financially stable. It is right that working abroad might lead you to a more stable life but not everyone has this kind of luck.
Janice, 29 year old, Filipina, worked as a domestic helper in Hong Kong. Her employer was radio host actress Celia Sie Janice jumped off from their windows flat on the 21st floor. According to paramedics, Janice was dead on the spot. Investigators wasn’t able to retrieve any suicide note so the case was tagged as suicide. The autopsy, on the other hand is still pending.
According to investigation, Janice was hysterical upon admitting that she stole jewelry from her employer, Celia Sie. The jewelry is worth approximately HK$ 600,000.
Janice admitted that she pawned the jewelry and just when Celia was about to bring Janice to the pawn shop, Janice jumped off the building at around 9:55 am, last Thursday.
The Chairman of Hong Kong Employment Agencies, Cheung Kit-man pronounced that domestic helpers who has committed thief should be dismissed as soon as possible to avoid future incidents.
Janice might have felt depressed regarding the issue and simply committed suicide. Depression is very common in OFWs especially because they are away from their loved ones. Small misfortune and they could just simply end their lives. A volunteer group aiming to help domestic helpers, encourages them to hand this matter to the designated authorities.
