No body deserves to be treated unjustly. Just like any other Overseas Filipino Workers, a household service worker (HSW) is entitled to get equal rights and benefits as an employee. It will be a clear violation of their rights and the law once they suffer abuse or maltreatment. By all means that such circumstances arise, employers will be held liable as per the law.
There, it is best that all HSWs should know their rights so they can refrain themselves from getting untoward abuses. HSWs are entitled to these rights:
- Proper Living Condition
HSW needs to be provided with their primary needs inside their employer’s house such as pillows, mattress, blankets, proper air ventilation, and a room to stay. It is your right to have all these necessities so you can perform your duties and responsibilities well. For safety measures, you can ask for your room’s spare key so you can lock it for privacy.
- Eight Hours of Work
Just like any other workers, HSW are entitled to work for eight hours ONLY. Beyond that, you can certainly raise a complaint to your employer. Additionally, you are entitled to have a rest day once every week. If your employer asks you to work on that day, he is required to pay you aside from you monthly salary.
- Three Meals in a Day
HSW work tirelessly whole day. You deserve to have nutritious meal three times a day.
- Deny Malicious Responsibilities
Some employers will ask you to do body massage. However, you should definitely deny doing so. This should keep you from any possibilities of sexual abuse.
- Medical Treatment
If there will be a time when you have to battle an illness, your employer needs to provide medical assistance. They should send you to the hospital and provide for your medical treatment.
- Proper Salary
Your contract particularly outlines your expected salary. Employers must abide to this or face penalty.
