The former Overseas Filipino Worker from Qatar successfully won the labor case he filed against his previous employer and recruiter. The 26-year-old man had to suffer health related problems because of the maltreatment he got from his employer.

The labor case was filed one year ago at the National Labor Relations Commission. The result turned out to be in favour of the OFW Rafael Alejo Ambrad.

Ambrad stopped working since 2015 because he was permanently incapacitated due to too much work. He is from Cebu and decided to work in Qatar last 2014 as a carpenter but had to resign after a few months due to acute pain.

In a statement issued by him, he said that he was obliged to do heavy work for five days with only one helper when it was supposed to require four workers. A lifting device was also not issued by his company. Because of the injuries he acquired, he can no longer work in a construction and lift heavy object again. Ambrad resigned last March 2015 because he was denied assistance and paid sick leave.

Ambrad felt that his work in Qatar was entirely traumatic. He also thought that he will have the same fate like other migrant workers who has to return to the Philippines already in a coffin.

Upon the ruling of NLRC, the respondent had to pay QAR20,063.83 or $5,509, six-month salary unexpired portion of contract, 1 month unpaid salary, annual leave pay, PATAKA refund, gratuity pay, salary differential and 10% attorney’s fees.

Ambrad has gone back to school and is currently a college student.
