EDMONTON Worker Sentenced To Jail Over Labour Tracking Charges

EDMONTON – A 46-year-old OFW in Alberta was sentenced to imprisonment over alleged labor trafficking of dozens of foreign nationals for approximately four years. She is sentenced to spend two and a half years of her life in the prison.

Last February, Filipina Jennilyn Morris was able to plead guilty over the labour trafficking charges she is currently facing which is under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act. The charges given to Morris was the first in Alberta. After her guilty plea, she was able to live with her whole family and started working at a golf course and sometimes worked as a taxi driver.

Just this May 20, Friday, she was brought in custody to serve the sentence for her doings.

It is said that Morris took job orders since January 1, 2007 until August 30, 2010. These workers were coming from the Philippines and was sent to Edmonton. They were able to work as a cleaning agent in the cleaning company that Morris previously worked, Demot Cleaning Co. Inc. Morris then refused to pay all her promised wages offered in their contracts. Morris even charged these workers with additional fees for the plane tickets and all the paperwork. There are a total of 68 foreign workers affected by this incident.

The affected individuals are undetected because they don’t mostly know their working rights which is why they refuse to complain.

Morris went to Canada last 1998 from the Philippines and worked as a live-in caregiver. She then achieved her permanent resident visa last 2001 and Canadian citizen by 2008.
