With the tension currently happening in the Middle East, the Department of Foreign Affairs is prepared to lift alert and order the mandatory evacuation of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) should the tension continues and gets even worse.
Department of Foreign Affairs Secretary Allan Peter Cayetano expressed the department’s great concern to about 2 million OFWs in the Middle East who most of them were in Saudi Arabia
“We are very much concerned with what is happening in the Middle East.”
The DFA also said that it is closely monitoring developments in Saudi Arabia, Lebanon and Iraq.
However, Cayetano stated that things are still under control as of this time but should the condition gets worse, they will immediately respond by getting our kababayans out of danger.
“There is no need to be alarmed at this point, but if the situation escalates, we can be expected to respond and lead our kababayans out of harm’s way.”
Meanwhile, DFA states that it is also closely monitoring the situation in Lebanon where almost 30,000 OFWs are currently employed.
Should there be tension as Saudi Arabia escalates power struggle, the OFWs will immediately be ordered to leave Lebanon the same way that Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and the UAE had ordered their citizens to immediately leave their country.
