Medical Experts Advice the Public to Stop Doing Self-Medication during Sickness; Medicines Become Useless When Taken Incorrectly

Wondering why despite of taking antibiotics you’re not still recovering from sickness?  Medical experts explain why.

In a report via ABS-CB News, medical experts had warned the public of self-medication especially when taking antibiotics.  They said Filipinos would often resort to self-medication and taking medicines which are not prescribed by the doctor.

Dr. Cora Flores, director of pharmaceutical division of the Department of Health emphasized that taking antibiotics without doctor’s advice can do more harm than good to our bodies.

“Mahalagang huwag po tayo basta-basta uminom ng antibiotic kung hindi kinakailangan… Makapagdudulot ito ng sama sa ating katawan, makakapag-develop tayo ng resistance kung hindi kinakailangang uminom nito.”

She added that most often, people would take antibiotics when sick without knowing the real cause of it, whether it’s viral infection or it’s bacteria that causes it.  So instead of getting better, the antibiotics become useless and not effective; thus, a sick person does not recover from sickness.

The bacteria also gets resistant from antibiotics, making it ‘powerful’ and harmful to the body. Aside from that, we tend to spend more money on medicines that do not really help us get well since the medicines we are taking are no longer effective leading to prolonged medication.

Dr. Flores shared, for instance, for a patient with tuberculosis, the normal medication is 6 months.  Yet, it could be until 18 months if the bacteria becomes resistant.

Experts advice to always seek medical attention from doctors for proper diagnosis and medication. Doctors would be able to give the right prescription stating how medicines should be properly taken, its dosage and proper administration.

However, Flores emphasized further that when taking antibiotics, when a patient feels better, it is still a must that the entire medication be finished. This is to fully kill the bacteria and prevent it from recurring again and becoming more resistant.
