OWWA Owes Private Hotels More Than P200 Million, May Stop Operation As Quarantine Facility For OFWs

As the number of Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) return to the Philippines that need accommodation for their quarantine period, more and more hotels are losing their capacity to pay for their workers especially in Tagaytay, Cebu, and Metro Manila.

“We will try to accommodate their needs, but at some point, we might have to do just that if OWWA continues to refuse to pay our hotels. Our establishments need income to pay our employees.” President Christine Ann U. Ibarreta

The said problem arose after the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) failed to pay their debts in these hotels. According to Christine Ann U. Ibarreta, President of the Hotel Sales and Marketing Association (HSMA), OWWA still owes several hotels a total of P241.17 million as hotels were used as temporary shelter for OFWs who are undergoing a quarantine.

These hotels are as follows;

Sofitel Philippine Plaza – P45 million

Golden Phoenix – P36 million

Seda Residences Makati – P9.5 million

Astorias Ortigas and Makati – P11 million

Linden Suites – P19.3 million

Luxent Hotel – P12.9 million

Ace Hotels – P6 million

Quest Tagaytay – P3.2 million

Discovery Suites – P3 million

Hotel Rembrandt – P7 million

Microtel/Tryp by Wyndham – P26.5 million

Midas Hotel – P4.1 million

Azumi Boutique Hotel – P3.5 million

One Pacific Place – P11.7 million

Quest Hotel Cebu – P15.7 million

Crimson Hotel Filinvest – P5 million

Marco Polo Cebu – P473,000

Chateau Royal – P4 million

This is considered as the second case of unpaid debts of the government following the P1.1 billion debt of PhilHealth to the Philippine Red Cross.
