Working abroad has always been a dream for most Filipinos. Aside from the high wages, an Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) would enjoy a more comfortable lifestyle and a better way of living. So even if they are apart from their families, at least they wouldn’t have to worry a lot about living conditions.

But unfortunately, not every place is full of roses, even in the North American countries where people perceive it to be the land of the free and the easy. One OFW, Bartolome Batongbakal, has related how life in Canada is actually hard.

In Canada, it’s necessary to own a credit card to prove you have the capacity to pay; otherwise, you won’t be trusted by loaners and store owners. You have to own a car because if you don’t, you have to work for miles. You have to work harder than usual to pay for your bills and utilities. The cost of living is expensive—a trip to Disneyland costs 10 hours of one’s usual salary.

The blog post didn’t discourage Filipinos to work abroad, but gave a complete reality check that just because someone is earning dollars doesn’t mean they are better off. He capped off the article by praising the OFWs for being so hardworking and tolerating to give their families a better life.
