Saudi Arabia: No ban on hiring Filipino workers

The Saudi Labor Ministry denied it issued an order banning the recruitment of Filipino workers. The Philippine government also issued an assurance the labor pact between the two nations remains in place.

Philippine Ambassador Ezzedin Tago said nothing had changed between the two countries. The Saudi ministry had issued a statement possibly to react to a report from local media.

Ministry of Labor Spokesman Tayseer Al-Mufrej said Saudi Arabia has not stopped issuing visas for domestic workers in the Philippines. The two countries are improving hiring procedures and implementing aspects of the labor pact, which include evaluating and monitoring hiring firms, incentives for good performance, and penalties for violations.

Saudi Arabia has launched initiatives to protect workers’ and employers’ rights. This includes awareness of Saudi cultural norms and filing complaints in different languages.

The agreement also requires workers to be free of criminal records and infectious diseases. Medical certificates must be issued by certified health centers.
