Saudi warns against ‘advanced stage’ of terrorism in Philippines

Philippine government is looking into an advanced act of terrorism that is said to strike the country’s airlines.

The news came out following the crash of an Egyptian Air plane which killed 66. While there is a possibility of mechanical failure, authorities are also looking into acts of terrorism as the cause of the crash.

On January 22, the Department of Foreign Affairs’ Intelligence and Security Unit received a notice from the Royal Embassy of Saudi Arabia which said Iranian Revolutionary Guards are planning to hijack or bomb a plane of a Saudi Arabian Airlines fleet. The hijacking team is said to consist of 10 people, one affiliated to Hezbollah in Lebanon, and another one an Iraqi national.

Six members of this team have already left for East Asia through Turkey on two different flights. The embassy said that it is likely that the hijacking will occur in Southeast Asia, most likely in Malaysia, Indonesia, and the Philippines.

The embassy also warned that the plan has reached an advanced stage. It requests necessary security measures by strengthening inspection procedures at international airports, particularly Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), where planes from Saudi Arabian Airlines land.

Members of the Special Operations Unit were already seen patrolling NAIA.

According to Aviation Security Group Director Pablo Francisco Balagtas, they’re doing all security measures and preparations, but it would be better if security equipment in airports could be improved.
