Filipinos warned to be cautious in midst of Baghdad bombing

A camp for Iranian rebels near Baghdad’s international airport was bombed on Monday.

According to the People’s Mujahideen Organization of Iran (PMOI) said the bombardment caused casualties among residents of the camp. Several caravans in the camp were set on fire.

PMOI spokesperson Shahriar Kia said the group suspects “Iraqi groups affiliated with the Iranian” government were responsible for the shelling.

A witness who lives near the airport heard twenty to thirty explosions. It was unclear whether any of the airport’s facilities were hit.

The PMOI have come under attack several times after siding with former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein during Iran’s war in the 1980s. Their camp near the airport was previously shelled in October.

The Philippine Embassy in Iraq tweeted a reminder to Filipinos in the country to remain vigilant, to stay indoors, and to avoid unnecessary travel in the next several days. They also advised Filipinos not to take public transportation and to stay away from crowds and public places. They also advised Filipinos to register with the Embassy so that they can be contacted in case of an emergency.

For those who want to go back to the Philippines, they are advised to get in touch with the Embassy for assistance.
