Filipina Domestic Helper Faces Robbery Case for Allegedly Stealing from American Employers

A Filipina domestic helper in Dubai was put under police custody after allegedly stealing from her employers.  Employers found stolen items inside her bag which was supposedly to be sent to relatives in the Philippines.  After being discovered, helper was begging for pardon but employers decided to file charges against her.

The 51-year-old domestic helper whose name was not specified in a report, was facing charges before the Dubai Court of First Instance for stealing a purse, a valuable bracelet and some branded clothes from American employers on April 1.

According to the report, the helper was about to leave the house with a handbag containing clothes she claimed to be hers with the intention of sending them to relatives.  When the employers opened her bag, they saw the branded clothes the female employer had recently bought in the United States.

Shortly, they started to check on the helper’s room and also saw the female employer’s valuable purse worth Dh7,500 (P105,000) hidden in her belongings.  That time, the helper insisted on going to the bathroom but turned out that the reason why was because she had kept a bracelet in the wash room. The employers immediately reported the incident to the police, who promptly responded and took the Filipina into their custody.

Prosecutors charged the Filipina for robbing from her employer.  But on Thursday, she failed to appear before the Dubai Court of First Instance under presiding judge Urfan Omar where she was expected to enter her plea.

The female American employer stated:

“I had recently arrived from the US, from where I purchased branded clothes. The suspect was supposed to send a handbag to her relatives and when I searched her bag, I discovered that she had taken the new clothes and hid them in that bag. My husband and I also went to search her bedroom … we found that she had kept aside my valuable purse. Suddenly, she said she wanted to go to the bathroom … but my husband prevented her. When she insisted, we searched the washroom and found my bracelet hidden inside. After we called the police, the suspect cried and asked for pardon.”

On October 30, Judge Omar will sentence the Filipina suspect in absentia for failing to appear before the Court.
