In a recent video that became viral online, a Kuwaiti woman was seen insulting a Filipino ex-pat. She was apprehended by the local police and was released after paying KD500 bail.
Racial attacks on ex-pats are greatly condiment especially those who hold them responsible for the spread of COVID-19 in the country. According to an official source, hate speech and racism are rejected because the COVID-19 crisis is encountered globally.
“What Kuwait authorities are doing in terms of quarantining certain areas is first and foremost to protect the ex-pats of these areas providing the facilities of health, food care, and security measure are evidence of nondiscrimination against them,” says a reliable source.
“Same official sources warned against exaggerating and highlighting nationalities such as the Indian, Egyptian and Bangladeshi communities are those being responsible for the prevailing crisis in the country at present,” Arab Times reported.
According to a professor of sociology at Kuwait University, this discriminatory sights from ‘weak souls’ wanting a certain party to be guilty and therefore punished.
“If we read what is written in the media we fear articles, videos, and corresponding tweets between Kuwaitis and Egyptians, then the accusations accuse each other. This is what must be stopped by the concerned authorities immediately, in order to preserve the social fabric and in order to protect the humanitarian image of Kuwait. Kuwait provides complete health care to the infected ex-pats same as Kuwaitis and supports their good health. Kuwait also provides financial aid to the World Health Organization and many countries need help these days,” the professor added.
