Filipina in Canada Complains About The CAD2,000 Cash Assistance, Says It’s Not Enough

A Filipina in Canada is being criticized online after she complained of the CAD2,000 (PhP72,481.99) cash assistance which was given by the Canadian government to workers affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Nym Calvez previously worked as a hotel attendant at the Vancouver hotel. According to her, the cash assistance given by the Canadian government is not enough as she cannot send money to her family in the Philippines. She is asking the Canadian government to help affected workers for a long recovery.

“The government helped us with the CAD2,000 that they are giving us. Aside from that, there’s nothing much available for the workers and it’s pretty disappointing but we’re hoping in the long run or the long term, the government will figure out something for the workers especially in my industry,” says Calvez. “We are the most hard hit because we rely on tourism for our business and our work. Seeing things right now, it’s going to be a while before people want to travel or stay in hotels.”

Calvez’s main concern is the money that she will be sent to her family in the Philippines. The cost of living in Canada is also very expensive, including the house and the food that she consumes every day.

She is asking the Canadian government to provide long term help for workers like her. But netizens reacted negatively on her statement.

“I was cringing while watching this. Got laid off as well but I’m grateful that Canada is giving us CERB… if 2k is not enough for you… be a frontline worker…. you wont believe it, i do have friends who work at grocery stores and they don’t get 2k a month and they are risking their lives.   Even with a $2 per hour increase… wait till CERb is done and EI kicks in… it will be less than that,” says one netizen.

“Man we only got $1200 here in U.S. just one time. you should be thankful cause you received $2000 a month,” says another netizen.
