LOOK : 160k Filipinos abroad risk losing right to vote

About 160,000 Filipinos abroad are at risk of not being able to vote in the 2016 Philippine presidential elections.

The Commission on Elections has announced that overseas registered voters who failed to vote in the last two consecutive elections are scheduled for deactivation. This is the same situation for those in the Philippines.

US Pinoys for Good Governance and other Filipino organizations overseas have failed a petition with the Comelec to oppose the disenfranchisement of these potential voters.

Atty. Ted Laguatan, the lead counsel, said the poll body has the discretion not to enact the provision. He added that overseas Filipinos are one of the country’s biggest sources of income. Disenfranchising them would mean that the biggest sources of income would lose their say in selecting the next leader of the country for the next six years.
