While there is a belief that one’s fate is set in stone, your fate is bound to change if you work hard for it.

This is the story of  Rebecca Bustamante-Mills a maid-turned-Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of one of the biggest events management companies in Southeast Asia.

The success of the Dasol, Pangasinan native wasn’t handed to her in a silver platter. The seventh child out of 11 in her family was exposed to poor lifestyle. She said they would often wake up without food in their plates.

At the age of 10, she helped make ends meet by being a maid in various houses. Rebecca said that even though she was not paid, she learned how to run a business from her employers.

When her mother passed away, she enlisted as a janitress in the Rural Bank of Dasol. This was where she found out that their house was pawned in the bank.

That was when Rebecca realized that the only way to help her family was to go abroad. The bank helped her look for an agency that would later hire her in Singapore.

From being a domestic helper in Singapore, she got her chance to move to Canada where things got better for her. She met Richard Mills, a Canadian businessman who later became her husband.

Rebecca started a recruitment business in Canada while working in a cosmetics company. This opportunity opened many doors for her.

Despite her achievements in life, Rebecca never lost her roots and the determination that came from it.

She may be able to make money to buy things for her family, but it is love and trust that conquered all.
