OFW still waiting for a year for employer’s end-of-service payment

An overseas Filipino worker (OFW) claimed he has been waiting for over a year for his former company to pay him his end-of-year-service benefit amounting to SR68,880 (or PhP866,000). This is due to his leaving the company on November 2014 to return home.

The 59-year-old Bukhari Nor Cali from Mindanao wrote to Arab News, saying he left his company, a travel agency, in November 2014 after working there for nine years. He submitted his resignation letter on August 16, two months before his contract ended on October 15, 2014.

Nor Cali is currently sick. He has had a gall operation, had two strokes, and is suffering from hypertension. With no other source of income, he needs the end-of-year-service money for his medical bills and retirement.

He claimed that the company’s officials promised to deposit the money in his account, but have not done so. He has filed a complaint in the Saudi Arabian Embassy in Manila, but maintained that he has not received any help.

He had postponed his trip home upon resignation so he could receive the money. After another postponement, the landlord ejected him from his flat, leaving him to move to a low-cost hotel. What’s worse, the agency head traveled to the United States without settling his dues, and his employer’s officers were not advised to release the money.

When the accountant arrived on November 16, 2014, Nor Cali was promised the money, but was not given the amount.
