OFWs in Iraq urged to register with embassy during threats of dam collapse

The Philippine Embassy in Iraq reminded Filipinos working in Baghdad and other cities along the Tigris River floodplan to register with them in the view of the Mosul Dam’s possible collapse.

The embassy approximated 300 Filipinos working in Baghdad and nearby cities.

Chargé d’Affaires Elemer G. Cato said registering would help the embassy know where the overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) are and how to reach them in case of an emergency.

The Iraqui government has previously warned residents living along the Tigris to consider relocating six kilometers away from the river amid threats of the Mosul Dam collapsing.

The Mosul Dam is one of the biggest dams in the world in terms of reservoir capacity. It is in danger of collapsing due to faulty construction.

Cato said some Filipino workers hesitate to register in fear of repatriation due to the current alert level 4 in Iraq. He clarified that the embassy is making sure that all Filipinos in Iraq are safe.
