Filipino caregivers in Canada are calling on Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to stop “Project Guardian”, which targets foreign caregivers through raids across the British Columbia and the Yukon region.
“Project Guardian” aims to protect Canadian families from caregivers who leave them without finishing contracts. They investigate alleged violations in the caregiver program.
However, Filipino caregiver groups say the random raids unethically target caregivers already being abused by employers.
Data obtained by the West Coast Domestic Workers Association (WCDWA) showed the Canadian Border Services Agency conducted a total of 38 investigations from January 2014 to October 2015. Eleven of these investigations sought help from the WCDWA, all of them Filipinos.
WCDWA executive director Natalie Drolet said in these eleven cases, the caregivers left the employers due to abuse, from not being paid properly for overtime, verbal abuse, sexual harassment, etc.
Most caregivers were deported after being found out to be working for new employers without proper papers.
Migrante BC said Project Guardian is directly targeting the Filipino community, and they are calling for a stop to the project.
