Tagalog helpline in LA provides legal assistance to Pinoys

Asian Americans Advancing Justice, a civil rights group in Los Angeles, California, launched a Tagalog helpline to expand their reach of legal services to the Filipino community in Los Angeles.

AAAJ LA executive director Stewart Kwoh says the helpline will offer better opportunities so people can get jobs.

The nonprofit organization has given legal assistance to Asian Americans with regard to discrimination, human trafficking, and immigration issues. AAAJ LA representatives in seven different languages receive an estimated 10,000 calls per year.

AAAJ representative Jeanette Sanyo said Filipinos can call in the helpline if they want to apply for citizenship or they have legal issues, such as housing, immigration, family law, or domestic violence. She can also offer legal assistance in Hiligaynon and Cebuano.

Philippine-born Jessica Calazo says the Tagalog helpline is beneficial because work, housing, and citizenship issues in the US are really difficult processes to navigate for a new immigrant in the country.

The helpline also meant to aid eligible Filipinos to apply for citizenship during the election year.

Filipinos can call the Tagalog helpline telephone number (855) 300-2552
