GOOD NEWS : BOC to remove physical inspection of balikbayan boxes

The Bureau of Customs (BOC) has reported that an estimated 1,500 containers with 600,000 balikbayan boxes arrive in the Philippines every month. The number usually doubles during Christmas season.

Every year, overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) face the same problems in sending balikbayan boxes. Aside from delayed arrivals, there are also cases of pilferage.

BOC advises OFWs to give a two- to three-month allowance to send their balikbayan boxes if they want it to arrive on or before December. This especially holds true for OFWs in far-flung countries.

The bureau has also announced that they will be removing the random physical inspection of balikbayan boxes, though the boxes will still undergo the mandatory X-ray and canine examination.

The Department of Trade and Industry’s Fair Trade Enforcement Bureau is open for questions and complaints in sending balikbayan boxes.
