Have you heard of “rent-sangla” modus operandi circulating recently?

“Rent-sangla” as the term connotes involves renting of cars by clients from owners with a specific fee which renters need to pay in a daily, weekly, monthly or yearly basis, whatever may be applicable based on the agreement of the owner and the borrower of a vehicle.

An individual or a group who might have an intention to scam would rent a car, pretend to be its owner and will pawn the rented car to a perspective buyer at a reasonable amount.  After the scammer has been paid, he/she will no longer be located by the real owner who later on discovers that the car already belongs to someone else.

Such incident has happened in Guagua, Pampanga when a former OFW was allegedly an accomplice to a “rent-sangla” scheme.

According to Unang Balita’s report in Friday, NBI operatives had arrested a former OFW identified as Alice Atienza at her home in Pampanga after her involvement in the said modus operandi was established.  She was then brought to the office of the NBI in Olongapo City and help to undergo investigations.

Among the victims of Atienza, one claimed that Atienza was able to get two of of the victim’s vehicles, one of which has been repossessed at an amount of P150,000 while the other was still left unlocated.

Another victim came out and testified against her after a van was taken on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Atienza was claiming that a certain Rodel Tayag was the one behind the said modus scheme.  However, even there’s truth to her statement, she will have to face charges of carnapping for being an accomplice.

As of this writing, investigations are still being conducted while authorities are establishing evidence and testimonies from victims of the scammers.
