44-Year-Old Filipina Acquires Freedom after Being Held as Slave

In a news reported by Evening Standard, a domestic helper currently working in London claimed being “free” after being held as slave in Britain. “Anne” (not her real name), claimed she will never forget how it was like living in “hell” after she was forced to work almost 24 hours a day when she was brought by a Saudi family whom she thought will look after her but then, she became a slave.

According to Anne, a 44-year-old Filipina, since her passport had been held by her Britain employer, she was afraid to escape as she could be arrested. She endured all the pain as a slave until finally, she got help in September from Wandsworth in London where she was being held as a slave.

A woman named Marissa Begonia, an anti-slavery campaigner helped free her and got her a job.  Begonia is the founder of The Voice of Domestic Workers charity.  She said, she believes Anne deserved to receive support because people like her usually end up confused and feeling helpless while in a foreign country.

In fact, Anne was still afraid of her employers that she even asked for her real name not to be used on reports. For once, her passport is still under the possession of the family she had escaped from so, she has to wait for a visa to be able to stay there, otherwise, she will be sent home to the Philippines.

Meanwhile, Anne narrated that her new elderly couple employers are lovely and are treating her right and fairly.  She added that she now gets to eat properly and is being treated with respect which is a very big thing for her as a human being.

“I am very happy, and grateful to God and to the Evening Standard and everyone who helped me escape. I have been to a restaurant and tried things I have never enjoyed in my life — I can even afford perfume now.”
