Philippine Government Rejects Plea of Libya To Uplift Travel Ban

The government of Libya insisted on lifting the ban towards the deployment of Filipino Workers, however, the Philippine government rejected the appeal with safety, security, and remittances as the major cause.

 

“Under the present Alert Level 2, for the safety of all parties, the deployment of new workers to Libya is still not possible,” says DFA in a public advisory.

The advisory is said to be based on the feedback taken from the remaining Filipinos working in Libya, “the required infrastructure and mechanisms for remitting their hard salaries are still in the offing.”

“Our OFWs in Libya face two natural difficulties: their safety and security, and their ability to send their earnings back to the Philippines,” as stated by the Foreign Affairs Department.

DFA also reminded the public to be very vigilant in accepting private job offers from Libya stating that these offers are “circumvent the safety features set up by the Philippines through so-called backdoor deployment schemes.”

With these schemes, Filipinos are told to travel first as a tourist to any Asian cities and secure a Libyan working visa from there.

“This is illegal recruitment, which is frowned upon by the Libyan government,” says the DFA.

DFA also reminded those applicants planning to work in Libya to go through the proper documentation, follow the government regulations and pass through the government agency, POEA.

The advisory from DFA is in line with the recent appeal of the Libyan government to the Philippines to perform a reevaluation of the ban and eventually lift it so they can start hiring Filipino workers again.

According to the Libyan Embassy Charge d’ Affaires Ahmed Eddeb, the situation now in Libya is already normal and they are badly in need of professional Filipino workers.

“We care about the Filipino people. We greatly value the remarkable effort extended by them, their contributions to the Libyan economy, either in the oilfield or in the humanitarian assistance they provide in hospitals and clinics,” says Eddeb.
