Hong Kong councilor on fire for “racist” remarks on Filipino maids

Hong Kong executive councilor Regina Ip Lau Suk-yee remains adamant on her allegedly racist remarks to the Filipino community in her country.

In a Facebook article that was later removed, Ip chastised the international media for focusing on the employers of domestic helpers and that they should also focus on “the issue of a large number of Filipino maids being turned into sexual resources for male foreigners.”

Also published in a newspaper, Ip also shared that she received complaints from “foreign women” that the government was “allowing Filipino domestic helpers to seduce their husbands.” Ip said that she couldn’t do anything under the existing law and that she had received tales of broken families after the husbands had affairs with their maids.

Like every other foreigner comment towards Filipinos, the community reacted angrily, with Civic Party lawmaker Claudia Mo Man-ching filing a complaint with the Equal Opportunities Commission over “blatant racism.” The Asian Migrants’ Coordinating Body, meanwhile, called for banning Ip in the Philippines.

Ip, however, refused to apologize for the remarks, saying she is only stating facts. However, she does not have quantitative data for her claims.
