The airport authorities in the Philippines is implementing a striker regulations not just with ‘balikbayan boxes’ but also to the luggage of OFW’s coming home to their families. There are already a lot of reported cases but still the government seems to be deaf and blinds regarding the matter. Another angry OFW posted her experience in the airport with regards to her luggage. According to her, the airport authorities broke the padlock and belt of her luggage. She waited for about 30 minutes for her luggage to be released, that was indeed a long time. That’s not the end of her nightmare, a lady on duty asked her if the watch she’s wearing has a receipt. What might be the motive of the lady guard upon asking for receipt?

According to the Bureau of Customs, they are doing this strict implementation of the rules and regulation so as to block and prevent smuggled items from getting in the Philippines. Smuggled items are not properly taxed and are sold in local markets in a much lesser price. The Bureau of Customs is right upon blocking the entry of these smuggled products but sad to say, the OFW’s are the ones who’s suffering from these kinds of trouble. The innocent people are suffering while big time smugglers still get through despite strict compliance of regulations.

Even with the issue regarding “balikbayan boxes”, OFW’s are still doubting if their packages are safe because there are still reports that some boxes were still being opened even though President Aquino already ordered the Bureau of Customs to stop these activities, instead, use scanners and K9 dogs to check the items in each balikbayan box. Because of the issue regarding balikbayan boxes, the union of OFW’s conducted a “No Remittance Day” just to stop the opening of their hard-earned boxes which must be opened ONLY by their family. The issue should be addressed properly by the government so the OFW’s abroad are the ones suffering from these activities.
