Two overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) Rhea and Flora (not their real names) went to Kuwait on December 2014, to chase the usual OFW dream of bringing comfort to their families.

For eight months, they endured the torture and abuse of their female employer in Kuwait. Rhea related how their female employer would slap her and beat her up. Meanwhile, Flora would get hit in the heat until she bled, or she would get her eyes clawed out.

The two OFWs also said they have been shaved bald by their employer on at least two occasions. Rhea had also almost become mute because her employer tried to cut her tongue out, and while her tongue was spared, her mouth and her teeth were not.

The two saw their chance to escape when their employers went on vacation to America.

On August 8, Rhea and Flora went to the Philippine Embassy in Kuwait, but they were dismayed when the case officer brought them to the police station on September 21. There, their employers had them detained.

Case Officer Mar Hassan, however, denied the claims. He said that when they were on the police station, the Criminal Investigation Department Officer summoned the employers to explain their sides and for them to be positively identified by the victims. While being investigated, it was discovered that Rhea and Flora had been charged with absconding cases.

Hassan said he returned to the OFWs with embassy lawyer, but the police refused to release them.

Rhea and Flora, however, had a different story.

Rhea said that Hassan that if they want to go home, they should cooperate with the police. Hassan, however, denied that allegation.

The two OFWs were released upon plea of Vice Consul Sheena Tesorero. The two are currently in the embassy shelter and are waiting for their case to progress.

They also filed an affidavit of complaint against Hassan.

Consul General Raul Dado said there has been a misunderstanding between the two parties. In the end, he promised in behalf of the embassy that they will prioritize Rhea and Flora’s cases.
