Tighter protection among Overseas Filipino Workers (OFW) is being pushed in the Senate.
The said move was due to the recent incidents of abuse perpetuated by employers and the employment agencies taking advantage of OFWs under tough situations.
Senator Risa Hotiveros pushed for tighter protection for OFWs following the case of an OFW who was abused in Saudi Arabia. The OFW eventually passed away following the brutal encounter.
According to reports, OFW Jovelyn Tang Andres was pregnant when she went to Saudi Arabia for employment. This was later on discovered by her employer. But her case was not welcomed positively by her employer so Andres was returned to her employment agency.
But instead of helping the poor OFW, the agency forced her to drink medicine to abort the baby. This eventually led to her death.
Additionally, the OFW had a cut from her throat to her stomach. Some of Andres’ remains including her brain were missing.
The OFW was cremated but her family in Davao City is determined to know the real incident behind the passing of the OFW. An investigation is being launched to question the agency of the OFW.
