HONG KONG – Filipina domestic helper acquired bruises all over her body following an argument with her employer due to a broken laundry hanger.

A certain Ruth Ramos Daria, 36-year-old, acquired injuries last April 2016 just because of a broken laundry hanger. Daria also asked for help from Hong Kong Mission for Migrant Workers for compensation over the injuries and bruises she got after the assault. Her employer also made illegal salary deductions. Her employer illegally deducted Daria’s salary over a scratch in the bath tub and wardrobe.

Her employer, Wong Wai-keung, a settlement fee of $4,110 was paid to Daria after winning the initial round of claims towards her employer. She won the case despite the initial claims of her employer’s non-termination of employment contract. The domestic helper insisted that she was thrown away from her employer’s house in Tai Kok Tsui last April 23. She then reportedly went back to her employer’s house but denied entrance.

Daria tried to go inside and look for her bag but her female employer immediately stopped her through pressing hard on her hand, causing bruise on her left forearm. Daria’s male employer then pressed her right arm to finally drive her away.

Wong then threw her bag outside, prompting Daria to get her mobile phone to call the police. Police immediately came and Daria left her employer’s house.

According to reports, the anger of her employer arose when they saw a broken plastic hanger. They refused to listen to Daria’s explanation and even started to raise questions about the things that Daria allegedly broke inside the house. Her employer even accused her damaging their washing machine when in fact, the damage was already there even before Daria came to their house. Daria worked for them for 1 year and 8 months.

“They both pushed me out of the premise(s) then closed the door. I have nothing with me so I knocked (on) the door and asked them…to let me (in) to get my handbag,” Daria said.

The next day after the incident, Daria clearly saw the bruises and scratches all over her arms. She decided to file a complaint against her employer through the help of the Philippine Consulate.
