Rules To Follow : No Work for Domestic Helper On Their Rest day

With these rules by the employer is quite frustrating. One day holiday a week is just a short rest for Domestic Helpers. Meeting friends, go to Church and send money to the Philippines is the main reason why they need to stay outside.

Domestic helpers are encouraged to remind their employers that they should be given a mandatory 24-hour rest day for every period of seven days of work.

Vice Consul Alex Vallespin quoted Hong Kong officials as saying “No employer should require their workers to do housework before they are allowed to enjoy their rest day,” He told Hong Kong News that the issue of continuous rest, and rest days were among those taken up during the January meeting between the officials of the Philippine Consulate and Hong Kong Labor and Immigration departments.

The 24-hour period also starts from the midnight of the rest day up until the midnight of the following day.

But regarding this issue it is hard for the Domestic Helper to say NO to their employers for afraid of losing their job.

Some employer’s give a written household rules to the helper what to do during holiday and some cases the day before they can request the helper to cook or clean something before they leave.

Mostly cases when the helper got home the dishes are waiting to be wash, kitchen need to be clean and living room to tidy up.

This is a routine. Some helpers are lucky if the employer will let them rest whole 24 hrs. or even 11 uninterrupted hours.

Hope some employers treat their helper as part of their family to have a good relationship.
