Due to the disrupted travel and tourism at prime tourist spots all over the world, Qatar Airways is looking into cutting significant jobs as the number of coronavirus patients all over the world grew a lot. Cabin crews were also told to prepare for redundancies.

Qatar Airways is one of the few global carriers that are still operating despite the global pandemic but they are already burning through its cash reserves and will seek government aid.

“We have to face a new reality, where many borders are closed, rendering many of our destinations closed and aircraft grounded as a result, with no foreseeable outlook for immediate, positive change,” says the Chief Executive of Qatar Airways Akbar Al-Baker in a notice to its cabin crews.

“The truth is, we simply cannot sustain the current numbers and we need to make a substantial number of jobs redundant — inclusive of Cabin Crew.”

Several roles were also made redundant due to the current pandemic.

“The unparalleled impact on our industry has caused significant challenges for all airlines and we must act decisively to protect the future of our business,” says a Qatar spokesperson.

There is no known number of jobs to be cut and they failed to comment on when they will resume their normal business hours.

Those who will be affected with this cutting of jobs will be paid with their contractual dues and overtime fees if any. Furthermore, those who cannot immediately return to their home countries can take advantage of the free housing and living allowance which will be provided by the company until their return to their home country.

Even Emirates and Etihad Airways did drastic measures of temporarily slashing wages of their employees to try to cope with the crisis.
