The death of Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) Flor Contemplacion was remembered during her 24thd eath anniversary. She was exe cuted in Singapore on March 17, 1995, but even after 24 years, modern day slavery still continues.

Several activists and some of her family members gathered to remember the 24thde ath anniversary of OFW Flor Contemplacion.

“Flor Contemplacion’s tragic fate continues to reflect the plight of Filipino migrants,” says Arman Hernando, chairperson of Migrante Philippines.

The protest focused on the continuing abuse of OFWs despite the already-passed law, Migrant Workers Act of 1995 that promises to prevent suffering similar case as Contemplacion’s.

Flor Contemplacion was exec uted on March 17, 1995, after the death of OFW Delia Maga and her 4-year-old ward Nicholas Huang.

However, according to a witness identified as Emilia Frenilla. Contemplacion was only used as a scapegoat of the crime. It is said that Huang Sing Kiong, employer of Maga, was the one who killed Maga after finding out Maga’s negligence was the cause of her child’s death.

“They (OFWs) expressed hope that President Duterte will address the roots of forced migration like contractualization, landlessness, low wages, corruption, et cetera. Three years on, many OFWs are still facing the same problems brought about by the government’s labor export program,” says Migrante
